Although it can at times seem slightly inundated by its large number of visitors, Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis, remains a pretty township, well worth a stroll. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Arrive early to beat the tourist crowds.
- Assisi’s main drawcard is the stunning, multi-levelled Basilica di San Francesco, completed in 1253. The site is one of incredible artwork and immense religious significance, and a good deal of time should be allocated for exploration. Be sure to explore both the upper and lower churches. The burial place of St Francis is to be found in the basement level.
- Assisi Cathedral is another of Assisi’s fine places of worship, and is also the place where St Francis was baptised.
