• The Banks Peninsula is of volcanic origin, resulting in a rough terrain very much in contrast to the almost total flatness of Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains.
  • It takes around an hour and a half to drive from Christchurch to the French settlement of Akaroa.  It’s a small relaxed township, a good spot for coffee or fish and chips.
    • One popular option from Akaroa is swimming with dolphins.
    • Penguin viewing (as part of a tour) is also an option on the Banks peninsula.  For the best experience, join an evening tour.
  • If you wish to explore beyond Akaroa, the terrain of the Banks Peninsula results in a unique variety of bays and inlets, many only accessed by narrow dirt roads.
