At 14,505ft (4,421m), Mt Whitney is the highest mountain in the continental US. You can drive half way up by taking the excellent Whitney Portal Drive to the Mt Whitney Trailhead, elevation 8360ft (2550m), from Lone Pine. The Mt Whitney trail is 22mi in length, and doing it as a daytrip is surprisingly popular (it takes 10-20 hours). Permits are required, and arranged through the National Forest Service.
